 Conflicts and Harmonies between Men and Women—— The Interpretation of Feminism in Gone with the Wind

Abstract

Since its publication, Gone with the Wind has been regarded as a popular novel which shows women’s constant striving for independence. Margaret Mitchell, the author of the novel, endows the novel in style with quite obvious feminine characteristics. Through comparing, this thesis analyzes the different thoughts, personalities and attitudes toward life between Scarlett and Ashley, Scarlett and Frank in detail to highlight the conflict between men and women with intense awareness of independence in a men-centered society; through interpreting the similarities in personalities and the pursuit for life and love between the two practicers of pragmatism: Scarlett and Rhett and the two weavers of nostalgia: Ashley and Melanie, showing an expression of pursuit and expectation of the harmony between men and women.

摘  要

《飄》自問世以來即被認(rèn)為是1部表現(xiàn)女性獨(dú)立與自強(qiáng)不息的通俗小說，作者馬格麗特在寫作風(fēng)格上表現(xiàn)出極強(qiáng)的女性特征。本文運(yùn)用對(duì)比分析, 先分別詳細(xì)剖析了斯佳麗與艾希禮，斯佳麗與弗蘭克在思想、性格及對(duì)待生活態(tài)度上的對(duì)立, 表現(xiàn)出男權(quán)社會(huì)中具有獨(dú)立意識(shí)的女性與男性間的對(duì)立, 接著又分別闡釋了擁有求實(shí)精神的斯佳麗與瑞德和具懷舊意識(shí)艾希禮與梅蘭尼這兩對(duì)夫婦各自對(duì)生活、對(duì)愛情的追求及性格上的相似之處的和諧，從而表達(dá)了對(duì)兩性平等與和諧的追求和期望。
