A Comparative Study on Name Culture between China and Western Countries

Abstract

Most people think that name is a distinguishable mark between one and others. Its just a salutation of someone. In fact, as a unique social offspring, name bears a close link to its culture, and seems inseparable from the understanding of such information as a nation’s history, language, religion and customs. Thus, we should pay more attention to the difference of name culture in cross-cultural communication. This essay makes a close study of names in many countries. First of all, it examines the culture background in different countries. Then it focuses on the cultural influence on naming from form, time of appearance, origin, and usage. Finally, the article concludes that a comparative study of name culture does work effectively in cross-cultural communication. This article takes the name structure, the surname origin as well as the naming way of the Chinese (Han nationality) and the English and Americans for an example to discuss this question.

摘 要

大多數(shù)人認(rèn)為姓名只是1個(gè)人區(qū)別于他人的標(biāo)志，僅僅是對(duì)某個(gè)人的稱呼。事實(shí)上，作為1個(gè)獨(dú)1無(wú)2的社會(huì)衍生物，姓名與國(guó)家的文化有著密切的聯(lián)系，理解名字中的信息似乎同理解1個(gè)國(guó)家的歷史、語(yǔ)言、宗教和風(fēng)俗有著密切的聯(lián)系。因此在跨文化交際的過(guò)程中我們更應(yīng)該關(guān)注不同的姓名文化。本文對(duì)各國(guó)的姓名進(jìn)行了深入的研究。首先，分析各國(guó)不同的文化背景；然后從命名的形式，時(shí)期，起源和應(yīng)用等方面闡述了文化對(duì)命名的影響。最后，文章總結(jié)出對(duì)各國(guó)姓名文化做1個(gè)比較性的研究，有益于跨文化交際的開(kāi)展。
